DUSTORSION - dustup

While browsing through the back-end of dusturbance, I've noticed this unfinished post with Angolo's report from Venice Art Biennale 2011. This is a modest selection of picks that she made last June.

DUSTORSION - dustup

Let me introduce you to Wim Van Gelder, a friend that deserves multiple posts, considering that his work stretches from  harsh experimental noise, over the  tame photography and  arty short movies, to growing own vegetables. He is a true and committed autodidact.

Most of his work gets published on Noiseblog 2.1, which he started back in 2005. Blog section covers many interesting topics connected to the experimental music and movie scene, including Wim's own act as Portable Noise Kremator. The blog is beautiful collection of oddities and I personally love to browse through it in search for weird animation movies and vintage electro scores. I had a chance to see some of his acts as Portable Noise Kremator and next to being generally very noisy, they sometimes had an extra dimension, like narrative. Lately, Wim is busy with building his own gear and posts divine images of his DIY sequencers, which next to being cute, naturally, produce noise (link leads to one of easier pieces, still, be brave).

I will recomend his YouTube channel as well and entertain you with Wim's own short movie, “La Posture du Cadavre”(featuring Cybele “Blue Shift” Collins) which was screened last November at CINECITY, The Brighton Film Festival.

Second web site, Anachronology, is dedicated to photography, both from creative and technical point of view, but it seems that lately Wim tends to post more of his photography related work on facebook .Somewhere among those portraits there are Dust and Angolo hiding, because recently we hosted a portrait session in dusturbace quarters as favor to Wim, but mostly for purely selfish purposes.

aftermath

DUSTORSION - dustup

Just received an e-mail which is informing us that dusturbance.com domain name is available.

I think .net does us justice just fine. All this site needs are regular updates, so lets get them going.

Tonight we had the honor to meet Han Hoogerbrugge face-to-face. We featured him here not so long ago. I had a blunt casual chat with him and reported that his post gets as many hits as the ones that feature our own work. Now when I think about it, it's a compliment for us, because statistically it renders us as good and funny as he is. So, thanks, our dustitude is utterly flattered.

If i tell you that Birdeater couldn't come because she was hungry, you'd say bollocks. It's true. Nothing ever changes around here.

DUSTORSION - dustup

We are proud to present another friend of dusturbance, a patient photographer, an excellent cook (as mentioned previously here) and occasional esoteric reader, Max. When we are not gathered around the barbecue fire, we maintain a telepathic contact with him. This is the link to his web-site

You can find portraits of Dust and alien previously known as Angolo on his site, he made us look fresh like spring flowers. He's also responsible for all ( good) space fugue picks.

Thank you Max!

If you wouldn't exist, we would have to invent you.

DUSTORSION - dustup

I dare to predict the favorite new word of the following season , it is going to be GAMINE all over the place! I hear it already, gamine this, gamine that. Like all the nude stuff that was unfortunately produced, but doesn't flatter many, had to be put in good use but it could be saved only by a 70's gimmick trick, so, hop-la, gamine we go. Again...

Fashion really doesn't change, it's just responds to the world. It's a very reactive substance. This time the fire was too low to reach a melting point, so a lukewarm trend will have to do it for now.

I could put any photo and call it gamine, and you would believe it. I'll save you by not putting any.

Scroll down for updates, cos there really are, updates and it's a long post.

Here it is, in high visibility shield, spatter, blended.

I think if I would collect all comments that I leave on other blogs and sites in a course of a week, there might a decent written article on dusturbance. Why do I delay the moment of declaration and start finishing this web site plan of ours that includes dialog and discussions? I am lazy, I am I stupid (yes and yes), do I cut the corners in wide angle while approaching the target? Yes?

Not all the time!

Sometimes I just cut to the point. Here is the list of some thoughts

and I'll edit and update this post whole next week until each of these is linked to something. There are 8 titles and week has 7 days as we know it, which means that I'll have to do an extra one on Sunday (heresy!).

If you have something to add, WELCOME!

Update 8.3.10. - check the system

Nothing to be afraid about, this is just us pumping the blogging muscle and trying have fun with it. Real blogger wouldn't ever update or edit one same post, over and over again, anyway. But, this one will! It's a small rule to break, nothing significant, but feels fresh.  My feelings are that there is so much more than can be done with this space and lot more to explore and that there are no more delays, otherwise I can really start calling myself stupid-cos-lazy and well deserve it.

This exercise is about random. The random thoughts that are listed above are some sort of "theme of the day" and the task is to create appropriate content and a little bit reveal the things that we do in our daily creative lives.

There are some dustant deadlines and a perfect moment to start working. Basic lines of our work are, as ever, color- sound- oblivion and the best way to update is, simply put, to actually update. The process,  progress and development always appeal to us, they are as important as waking up in the morning with brilliant cunning plan. Looking backwards is also very necessary, we all like to check our reflection in any available reflective surface, don't we?

I like to play with ideas that inspire me and are a sort of foundations, always looking for a new perspective. A couple of years ago I did a collection inspired by eternity and it wasn't one of my best ones, but the solution that was found in applying Mobius strip and it pretty much never left my head. If you know what Mobius strip is, you would correct me and say it is about infinity, not eternity, and you would be right, but the fact that is so easily applicable to forms and textile was the biggest revelation.

mobius_stripmobiusmobius1mobius2mobius-shoemobiusarch1-mobiusmobiusstitch

just to mention some Google finds

Technically, this is a Holy Grail of construction possibilities. The fabric can be looped and folded in infinite number of ways (how appropriate).  Much more difficult is to comprehend the idea that it is surface with only one side, which means that the inside and outside of the garment are one surface only. No shell, no lining.  How can we call this one-surface - shellining? Maybe not.

There are some additional images and collages that I'll post later this week, which give more personal and emotional experience of Mobius strip. For me this is all about hope and oblivion, which is a good example of my emotional capacity, but science was my first big romance.

That's it for today!

Update 10.3.10. - bag of crisps?

Yes, I've failed to update yesterday, I've missed the daylight and .... it was night.

Today is the music day. I've linked the list above to some YouTube surprises. I've also linked some other places in this post... The reason why I didn't want to embed them is because you'd miss a moment of surprise and this way you can also be introduced to other stuff by given artists if they tickle your fancy.

So, scroll trough the article and hit the green lines, be brave. Though, I must admit, it might hurt sometimes.

All you need to do is too discover the links and click on them. If you find it all too dusturbing, you didn't pass to next level, sorry, you must leave this space immediately, before the larger and more permanent damage took place.

Enjoy, Dust

Update 11.3.10. - (real) colors or how we DIY?

When I was listing this thought the other day, I hoped that we will be showing you our faces today, but, instead, I've decided to show you a piece of our everyday wardrobe and the stuff that we do when you think that we are not doing anything.

I am sort of a person that is pretty productive, I try to make something every single day (emphasis on try). Some days are less productive and I manage to collect enough energy to change some buttons, sometimes 2-3 days gel into one long one. There is a nerdy perfectionist sitting in me and the bugger likes everything to be perfect and better (shape, fit, warmth factor), then, there is a stubborn clothes-saint which will try to resurrect and give another (and another) chance to things that look completely hopeless. The third one in the gang is impatient and fearless weirdo, this one just want it all and want it....yesterday (now is not soon enough) and instead of spending hours shopping for stuff that is not in the shops, it's so much much more efficient to make things, right? And this is how you get bursting closet! I cut new stuff, old stuff, shoes, even underwear and tights get a makeover. NO RESPECT! , that's how we call it around here, WE CUT THEM ALL!

This is our first outfit post!

These clothes are typical examples of what is made for our daily use.

!WARNING these items are pretty unadorned, just really plain and bare. Damn, I wish real life was this simple, but girl's gotta accessorize...

Every season small-stretchy dress is updated. These from two different serials, most of them are lined with super soft jersey and all have pockets, which is a must for getting that cool, that is so unique to all of us. When there is a hand, there must be pocket, ladies. The little dresses are  really a basics items, with just some very simple special features, in some cases it even means that all features are hidden and there is no visible top stitching ( all stitches are hidden, secretly attached to that deliciously soft under-layer). If there is a great vintage fabric, this is how it's often reused.

These are heaven for layering ( does layering go to heaven?), but I'm leaving it to your imagination.

dress1dress2dress3dress4dress5dress6

Very simple but every girl should have one of these! And I'm not just sayin'...

You must have noticed little icons on the pictures. That's just a bit of math, like multiplying, subtracting, adding and some permutations. They actually all make seance, but, hey, you do the math.

Jackets are very necessary lately, when winter lasts this long and is this cold, nothing beats good-looking insulation. Some of these are resurrected vintage finds, relined and boosted with loud details, some of them are made of a couple of items, usually skirts or similar inappropriate stuff, others have their sleeves on their shoulders, but one thing they all have in common, there is a layer of pure wool sewn in the the lining. I just refuse to look like stuffed pigeon in order to keep warm so I double line line a freak.

Lately I've been making leather trousers. Usually a pair or two surrender themselves to a cause. The beige ones were actually made first time around 10 years ago,  some enormous 80's pair was  sacrificed for the occasion and recently successfully resurrected.

beigeleatherfullbeigesidebeigeleather

blackleatherblackleather1

pleatssidepleatsfront

This is what I've been making these days, it's not even finished yet ( the jacket still needs the other half of buttons). Leather in color gives such a different impression than black one, specially when it is possible to combine different colors and textures.

brickfrontbluesuededownbluesuedeup

Sheer is something that is going around lately and I'm not immune to it. The jeans is our sample and I'm testing it.  There are some points in design that should be done differently, but the industrial mesh is great, really. Bum frills are optional. The last sweater is some second hand find that I've pared with mash that was stashed for ages. It's just here to show you how desperate I am to fix all abandoned clothes, but it's also a nice trick.

vestnetsweater

All we need is spring to finally come.

I hoped you liked what you saw. If you want more, let us know. If I ever get a nerv to do it, I'd like to make tutorials for some simple manipulations which don't include shredding, studding an tie-dying.

And last, but not the least, The Dog.

Update 14.3.10 - what do we eat, what not

Today is Birdeater's turn to share and she would like to introduce you to her friend Petra ten Katen.

Petra is one of most sound and authentic persons around and a good artist. You can see more of her work is you follow the link above. I am aware that her site is on Dutch, so I'll try to help you and navigate you trough her work. First I'd like to mention her art projects (!!!), sculptures and installations which are beautifully disturbing.  Now you can rest your eyes on her paintings.  Petra is also doing something called visual therapy , but if you are unable to indulge,  watch one of her videos (!!). This one is Birdeater's personal recommendation (!!!!!!!)

Dim lights

Petra has a brilliant sense of humor and some(all) her anecdotes are legendary. It would take writing a novel to describe properly those events, so you'll just have to trust us blindly.  Petra is a mother to a great little girl and she has an excellent eye for dead birds.

Update 14.3.10 - down&sides

I can imagine that very few of you managed to get here. Suddenly it feels like I can say whatever I want cos' no one is listening.

Update 16.3.10 - wheels, tires & suspensions

7.30 - wake up sunshine!......same time every single day, sometimes I do it so automatically that I don't even know if I'm awake or still asleep.  Breakfast, coffee offline, coffee online. One e-mail down, ten to go.

8.00 - beauty routine... blue or green, red or orange? Wee green on eyelids, orange smack on lips. High bun. Low bun. High bun. Ray Ban aviators (prescription glasses).

8.30 -  all those colors on my face... can I wear navy-gray-black with them... yeah, sure I can.  Style tip - first decide what you gonna wear and then put your make up on.

9.00 - online with one more coffee. I love my milky coffee with a dash of cinnamon, that's the only thing that I can not imagine giving up, ever. I'm writing a PR pack for new collection, exhibition and fashion show that we have planed for early summer. You didn't know? Now you almost do.

10.15 - Tuesday is a market day. I hardly ever miss it. Some guys are commenting my lipstick, bit later I reapply, just in spite.  Sun starts to shine stronger, orange looks blinding, but that's the best thing to wear with navy, right?

Market here has a great vintage and second hand clothing section, furniture, dead stock stuff. The prices are OK, but I avoid those neat stands with vintage clothing, there is not enough challenge there for me. Instead, I go for piles of second hand stuff. Sometimes they are selling the complete possessions of person who recently died, it looks like a sort of retrospective, usually completely useless, but funny non the less. It makes me think how would my pile look like if I would die right now. Frightening!

I get 3 second hand sweaters for 5euro, one of them is even H&M, I know how nonsense it sounds but it's just the color and cut that I needed, one is delicate open-work off-white granny thingy and it's perfect just the way it is, third one is stripy cos' I'm a big stripes hoarder and this combination I still don't have. With the smile on my face I keep on walking further and then, with a corner of my eye I notice something unusual. I'm not sure if it's a color of certain texture of fabric, but something seams odd with that pile of clothes tucked deep under kitchen utensils. Looks like something that doesn't really belong here. My scanner vision rarely fails and I go to see what treasures are hiding there.

First thing I pick up is Vanessa Bruno black tulip short skirt... Acne jeans...7 for all mankind... Isabel Marant...Made... JCrew...GSus...Humanoid...See by Chloe...Chloe... Burberry? All in size S, 36 and 28. That would be my size, maybe jeans can be size smaller, but hey, I'll grow into them.  I ask how much this stuff costs, guy replies 5euro per piece. OK. Now, let's think about this for a moment. I don't EVER buy designer clothes because there is only one designer that I'm supposed to support, and that is me. Only in the case of heavy sale discount, I  might consider buying something designer. It is very simple rule and very easy to follow. But here I am, standing in front of this pile of clothes that I can actually afford without thinking, and still doubting.  It feels like a trick, buying something cheap with fancy tag on it. It's similar to sale effect, you buy something because it's cheap, not always because it was really your choice. I personally buy most stuff on sales, but I'm not in the same category as most of the people,  I look at those things as half-products, cut them all and make them better, just the way I like it. The other important issue is that I do love anonymity of my wardrobe, nobody can really say which brand or which season is it. So, I'm still there, facing the pile, asking myself  should I walk around with See by Chloe on my bum, even if cost only 5euros? Should I compromise my standards or just be plain greedy? Do other designers wear other designers as well? 5 euros per piece? Who died?

After a lot of doubts and sweating, I bought a pair of legendary Chloe slacks, the most generic item on Earth, but so useful for bending the gender. For most of normal people this would be a no-brainer, but for us who indulge in fashion, very unsafe option, I mean, how the hell do you make this ordinary piece interesting?! I allowed myself to pick out one more piece, wanted a dress but got a pair of corduroy jeans from Vanessa Bruno cos they had the weirdest silvery finish which makes them look leathery. They are very low cut, which I don't ever wear, but this is more a purchase for research purposes, so it doesn't really matter.

I did feel like I was cheating, though. But I did ask the guy if he's gonna be here next week, not for me, but for my friends, naturally, like he knew my doubts, like he cared... but my guilty consciousness though this way it just sounds better.

Ahhh, now, it's time to get the vegetables, I almost forgot why I came to the market.

12.30 - having my lunch, thinking about what I just did.  I broke the rules for too small money and sold myself too cheap?

The rest of the day passed unnoticed,  winter clothes are not yet safely tucked away in the storage, Brussels sprouts for dinner as usual, nightmares of consumerism.

Dust

Update 19.3.10 - even better ones!

The last title from the list, but not the last update, he, he,he...

The story goes like this:

Last year we took part in the first edition of FASHIONCLASH in Maastricht, a new fashion and art event in Holland and it was seriously good, seriously! The organisation was a dream, great job guys! It's the most brilliant idea, a sort of "parallel" fashion week for a different sort of designers, a platform for a new talent that need this kind of support in order to develop. I thought it was a "true blood", where risk had priority over commerce and things were done out of pure pleasure. Did I already say that this wonderful support comes for free? N0, I didn't, so, now I'm gonna say it 100x. In which dimension those things exist!!!!? It is completely true.  This is also what makes it so special and effective. I showed two times at Amsterdam Fashion Week, once as a part of competition, second time as a winner, both times it was payed by organization, but I never got the idea that spending thousands of euros in order to show a collection to please the sore eyes of local Dutch press and editors can be beneficial, so, I never even considered investing in fashion shows. Until we joined Fashionclash, doing catwalk presentations was just a dustant ambition...

You can see how it all looked like on their web-site and blog. This year in June, the second edition will take place and we are invited to show a new collection.

We're gonna discuss that later, all right?

This year dusturbance is going to contribute with some additional program. We are broadening the spectrum of dusturbances with a video and animation features. Finally, after plotting for 10 years over lots of bear and coffee, three different countries and five cities, Birdeater and Dust are finally doing it : a film. Sounds important. But it is, because we have something to say, we know how to say it and people to help us with sayin' it.

We're gonna discuss that later as well.

For a PR pack that I mentioned before, we had to write a new dusturbance bio, because the old one was not serious enough, we thought. Here you can read a fresh one, one hour young:

"We are dusturbance.
Our aim is dusturb though the process of dustilation.
We share a collective thought with fashion and art, sometimes to admire, often to disagree. Every dustorsion is welcome. There are side doors waiting to be opened and there is never only one way to that pretty picture or that pretty dress. The ones that we are inspired to make begin their life in our hands, but resolve themselves only when they reach yours.... so the long chain of ideas can start...

Follow us on www.dusturbance.net  "

Does this sound better that the first one? Let us know.

The title of the video is "Side Doors" and we heavily improvised a screenshot, so don't laugh just yet, there will be plenty of opportunities for that later.

sidedoorstest

Obviously, it's gonna be an action movie with animated special effects and bird casualties.

Fingers crossed, Dust

I've updated this post more times than you guys read it  (the winner is obvious) in the time period of two weeks.

I've blogged in standard blogger-styles, music, inspiration, feature, fancy diary, latest news, outfit post ...got them all covered. It doesn't really feel like I've learned something that I already didn't know, just tried to do it as spontaneous as possible. If it was a bore to you, well, what can I say, it will never happen again.

It was quite a pleasure, dusturbation.

V&R are dusturbing

DUSTORSION - dustup

Viktor & Rolf presented a new collection. OK?

They were on the stage zipping, unzipping, turning inside-out & upside-down, pulling the strings. The collection was pretty black with silver hard-wear.There was not a another-twist- on-classic-trench to be seen.

How Can This Be?

DUSTORSION - dustup

It makes me angry to realise that while we thought that he was on the top of the world, he was actually fragile like the rest of us ordinary plebs.  I'm angry because it feels like my feeble ambition needs to be reconsidered now. He worked so hard to see his visions come alive, he was admired and respected, we were amused and inspired and it all appeared to work so well. It hurts to know that our love was not enough. Success can't mend a broken heart.

EDIT: The Gucci Group, the owner of McQueen's brand, decided that show must go on and will not shut down the label. The team will continue to design for now, in future maybe there will be someone brave enough to take the chief designer position. So, they sure have shamelessly decided to capitalize on dead. We strongly disagree with that decision.

Subzero dustilation

DUSTORSION - dustup

Our studio is officially the coldest place on Earth due to a heating malfunction. Our hands are numb, our long skinny legs turned purple from blue, therefore we are forced to brainstorm to keep ourselves warm. Single celled, we laid out some short and long term plans and are very pleased to present you with some of them.

On January 11th you can expect the release of the first D-shirt edition. It will be our most commercial effort to enter you lives. It will feature jersey, silk, zippers & other small metal hardware, naked girl (all legal, no worries), stencils, cosmetic sponges, potato's and fabric paint. The list might expand and you'll be accordingly alarmed.  We are aware that realising this edition during January sales might be a risky busyness, but it'll keep us (and you!) out of shops. The hazy trance of knowing that ZARA T-shirt at this time of the year can be purchased for a couple of coins can cloud one's judgements, but strong will survive. We know what we're up against here, but we'll do it anyway because we believe that we can offer a more profound level of commercial pleasure than the sea of mass produced cheapness.

We took on further dustilations on a bigger, long term plan of PRODUCT. We are developing an idea of modular dressing and it's the light of my life, honestly, as it sums up so much in one single clothing gadget. I wish I could show you all the wonderfull developments, but it's not smart to bore you before it's time to really, really, seriously bore you with it.

So, no pictures, hard, I know...
